Debbie Dawson - Counselling in York

York based BACP Registered and Accredited counsellor and psychotherapist working from a practice within easy reach of Acomb, Fulford and Heslington.

Welcome, and thank you for visiting. I do hope that you find my pages helpful and perhaps the start of the solution to the problems or issues that you are currently grappling with.

I offer face to face, online and telephone counselling and psychotherapy based upon humanistic principles to young people and adults. This means that I believe that everyone has the potential to be "that self which one truly is" (Rogers, 1961). As a fully qualified and experienced counsellor and psychotherapist I have worked in a wide range of settings. These include a national mental health charity, an agency offering support to young people, a sixth form and further education college, a local women's counselling service and an organisation offering counselling to GP referred clients. Therefore, I have experience of working with clients who have presented with many different issues and of offering short term counselling and longer term psychotherapy.

Sometimes life can put obstacles in our way, which can mean that it becomes increasingly difficult to live as we wish to.These obstacles can be significant life events such as the death of a loved one, the breakdown of a relationship, the diagnosis of a terminal illness or the loss of a job. They can also be less concrete such as a general feeling of purposelessness and worthlessness which makes everyday living a challenge. We may also have lost sight of our own resources so that we can feel overwhelmed by the situation. Alternatively, our experiences in childhood and our ways of being in the world may have an impact on how we relate to others and how we respond to challenges that we face.

As a counsellor and psychotherapist I am able to provide you with a safe, confidential and non- judgemental space where you can explore the issues that are causing you distress. You can do this at your own pace, I will try and match you, step by step. As a Registered and Accredited member of BACP I work according to the BACP Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy and receive regular monthly supervision.
