Debbie Dawson - Counselling in York

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is counselling?
Counselling offers you a safe, confidential and non- judgemental space where you can explore the issues that are causing you distress. I will work with you to help you make sense of your issues and to find your own answers. Counselling helps you to regain your equilibrium at times when you are feeling challenged by life events.

2. Is counselling for me?
If you feel that you may benefit from talking to someone who is trained to listen and who can provide empathic support and challenge, chances are that you will find counselling useful.

3. What happens in a session?
Typically each session lasts an hour and will vary depending on how you, the client, wish to spend it. We will usually spend time talking, but you may also wish to use other means to express your emotions when words are difficult to find. Some EMDR sessions will last 90 minutes.

4. How long will my counselling last?
That will depend upon a number of factors which we will discuss in our first session. We will usually agree to meet for 5 sessions initially with a review at the end of that time, so that we can decide what will best suit you. Some clients choose time- limited counselling, whilst others prefer a more open-ended approach.

5. Am I free to end my counselling at any time?
Of course, we will usually agree to dedicate one session to ending our work together.

6. How much does each session cost?
I charge £60 per hour session; longer EMDR sessions cost £90. I do have a limited number of reduced fee places available, and counsellors in training benefit from a reduced fee, for as long as they are in training.
Supervision is charged at the same rate, trainee counsellors are entitled to a lower rate until they are qualified.

7. What is your availability?
I offer sessions Monday to Thursday, some early morning and evening appointments are available; they do get booked up quickly though!

8. Where do you work?
I have a practice based in Copmanthorpe, York which is easily accessible from all areas of York, outlying villages, Tadcaster and Leeds. There is parking freely available and bus routes 13, 13A and the Coastliner all serve Copmanthorpe. I also offer counselling and supervision online, which is accessible to anyone living in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

8. What do I do next?
Please contact me on 07999 583641 or email me. I will be happy to answer any other questions that you may have.
